A few weeks ago I decided to become more intentional about what I bring into our house. There’s a laundry list of products I use every day that contain ingredients that are known to be harmful.

So today I went to order shampoo and conditioner from Amazon and without thinking twice I almost bought two bottles of our old standby brand. Thankfully, as I shopped around for the best price, it hit me…this is not what I want. Old habits are hard to break!

So, where to start? Google, of course! When I have time I really love to delve deep into a project and learn everything I can. BUT today isn’t the day for an exposé on shampoo. Today, I just need to some ordered. So back to my starting point…trusty(ish) Google! I typed in “best natural shampoo and conditioner ewg” and that brought me to this blog post by Blissful Miss that fast-tracked my search. From her pre-vetted options (all EWG rated 1 or 2) I took it a step further with my own criteria.

  1. Price
  2. Made for Normal-Oily Hair
  3. Bonus: Minimal Packaging

There are several fabulous brands that charge upwards of $3 an ounce. While I’d love to support their product, I simply can’t afford to. I was looking to spend closer to $1 an ounce, which is about 3x as much as I spent on our old shampoo. Here are the options that made my first round of cuts. They all have an EWG rating of 1 and a majority of positive Amazon ratings.

Product Size Price Cost/Oz 5-star %
Acure Organics, Shampoo, Pure Mint + Echinacea Stem Cell 8 oz $9.39 $1.17 63%
NaturOli Soap Nut Shampoo – Normal to Oily 16 oz $20.25 $1.27 65%
Free & Clear Hair Shampoo for Sensitive Skin 12 oz $9.00 $0.75 66%
Cleure Hypoallergenic Shampoo for Sensitive Skin 8 oz $12.00 $1.50 59%
Pure Life Soap Co. Shampoo 15 oz $8.63 $0.58 61%
Purple Prairie Cedarwood & Tea Tree Shampoo Bar Soap 4 oz $3.76 $0.94* 59%

*It’s important to note that this is a soap bar, so you would probably get more use out of the concentrated formula then out of the diluted formula in a bottle, so it’d be less expensive in the long run.

I decided to let price dictate which shampoos I’d try first and went with the Pure Life Soap Co in Green Tea Shampoo and Purple Prairie Cedarwood & Tea Tree Shampoo Bar Soap. I found them for the best price at LuckyVitamin.com. Even when you factor in their $6 shipping charge, it was about $10 less expensive than Amazon.
